Ever hear about a new Roller Coaster opening up at the local amusement park, and get really excited? The day it opens you rush down to the park, go through the rigor-ma-roll to find parking, pay an exorbitant fee for your admission , and yet still the excitement builds. Next think you know you are greeted with a line with so many twists and blind turns it feels like it may never end, and yet you gladly wait because you are so sure it's gonna be worth it. After an hour an a half it is finally your turn, you board the ride, and in less than eleven minutes, the ride is over and you are left wondering what exactly seemed so exciting about it in the first place. That was how I felt after watching 11-11-11 today.
Honestly I had to restart the movie four times because I kept falling asleep. I kid you not, it got that boring at times. 11-11-11 is that new roller coaster, and not in a good way. The movie is beautifully shot, with a ton of really cool imagery but filled with so much useless sub-context it would choke a horse that wasn't paying attention. In the end though I found myself wading through 120 minutes of mediocre story telling, for 11 minutes of resolution that left me wondering why I even bothered.
The story became predictable within the first twenty minutes. At least the story it was attempting to tell. Joe the successful author is having an otherwise bad year. He loses his wife and son in a fire, and his mind shortly thereafter. He doubts himself, he doubts his faith in God, and he would like nothing more than just to die. In comes mysterious hot chick, and he is immediately drawn to her for no other apparent reason other than she stalls him long enough to have a near fatal car wreck and shows up afterwards. Next thing you know Joe's father, who he hates, is dying. So it's off to Barcelona, Spain to spend time with Zombie pops, his wheel chair bound brother the priest, and a creepy hospice nurse in an equally creepy seaside mansion. All the while poor Joe is being plagued by constant reminders that the numbers 11:11 have some meaningful significance he doesn't comprehend. Ghostly images on security footage, allusions to immaculate conception and the anti-Christ ensue, and poor Joe finally gets his wish in an ending who's synopsis could be summed up by two words "who cares?"
In my humble opinion The movie depended way to heavily on a calendar to provide it's suspense, rather than actual story telling. Every twist and turn in what was supposed to be a suspenseful demon ridden examination of religious horror simply led the viewer off on another wild goose chase for meaning that was neither scary nor creepy in the slightest. The movie just tried too hard to be a deep and frightening roller coaster ride, and failed miserably in the attempt. I have seen super market parking lot roller coasters that left me feeling more terrified. I simply did not experience a single scary, suspenseful, or shocking moment during the entire film, which is the entire purpose of watching a horror film. As I mentioned earlier I fell asleep trying to get through this movie, not once but four times. So if you are having a bad day yourself, and need a potential sleep aid, this movie has potential. On the other hand, if you are looking for something scary or creepy, you are better off looking for a Clown on a Ferris wheel.
Now you're on your own.
